Satellite and terrestrial DMB of Korea, both faced with severe crisis, decided to seek the way to survive together. SK Telecom announces TU-Media, the carrier’s affiliate providing satellite-DMB service embarks on joint efforts with 6 terrestrial DMB operators to boost mobile TV.

To this end, a consortium established by SK Telecom and CipherCasting recently signed an agreement with terrestrial DMB special committee to promote DMB market. The two parties agreed to launch next generation DMB services (DMB2.0) such as interactive data service and real-time preset recording service.

SK Telecom says middleware based on BWS (Broadcasting Web Site) which is Korea’s home-grown interactive data solution, Conditional Access System (CAS) and DRM (Digital Rights Management) solutions will be modified for common use by satellite and terrestrial DMB.

For interactive data access, Korea’s three mobile carriers will share new service infra in the form of an open platform, according to SKT. The company explains the common service infra will save the investment that would have been made separately for satellite, terrestrial DMB and each carrier.

The interactive data service to be launched in the first half of next year displays video, sound and data service information on a single screen of a DMB device so that users can access various data services from the screen. For example, viewers will be provided with news reports and broadcasting information while they are watching mobile TV, and access wireless internet to download background music, past numbers of a series and coupons. A wide range of broadcasting-telecommunication convergence services will be available, too.

Agreeing to share a single solution, both satellite and terrestrial DMB services will continue collaboration by making joint proposals for policy making and running joint marketing and development projects for key technologies, SK Telecom says.
