As some 60 percent of the world’s population uses a cell phone, the mobile handset is emerging as a key driver behind social change in developing countries. The UN-affiliated International Telecommunication Union commented Monday on a report that the world’s mobile phone subscriptions exceeded 4.1 billion (61.1 percent) at the end of 2007.
In late 2002, a billion handsets were owned worldwide. Since one person sometimes has more than two mobile phones in developed nations, the ratio of the population to mobile subscription was 1:111 in Europe. Internet subscription also more than doubled from 11 percent in 2002 to 23 percent in 2007.
