TU Media reaches 2 million mobile TV users

Satellite digital multimedia broadcasting (DMB) mobile TV provider TU Media announced they had reached 2 million users for their subscription service:

The jump in the number of subscribers is attributable to the company introducing “Slim Package” rates, which allow SK Telecom customers to view some of its DMB channels for free.

방송 첫날 서버폭증..”예상외 반응” 청소년 유해, 성상품화 논란 여전

[이데일리 임일곤기자] 국내에서 서비스를 시작한 네이키드 뉴스(naked news)가 순조로운 출발을 보이고 있다.

여성 앵커들이 알몸으로 뉴스를 진행하는 네이키드뉴스는 성 상품화와 청소년 유해매체물 우려 등으로 논란이 되기도 했지만 연착륙 하는 모습이다.

28일 네이키드 뉴스 코리아에 따르면, 지난 23일 인터넷으로 서비스를 시작한 첫날부터 접속자수가 폭주한 것으로 나타났다.

네이키드 뉴스 코리아측은 “서비스 초반이라 정확한 방문자수가 집계되지 않았지만 첫날부터 접속자가 크게 몰려 서버가 혼잡했다”며 “당분간 서버 안정화에 신경쓸 예정”이라고 설명했다.

이어 “별도 광고를 하지 않았는데 첫날부터 방문자수가 예상을 넘어 당황했다”며 “한국 서비스 반응이 이렇게 좋을 줄 몰랐다”고 덧붙였다.

Mobile TV Audience Reaches 22 Million

The number of mobile television viewers in South Korea has now reached 22 million, according to the latest figures by wireless carriers Friday, as digital multimedia broadcasting (DMB) functions have become conventional in mobile handsets.

Despite the growing audience, however, a sustainable business model remains elusive for television operators who are reeling from declining average revenue per user (APRU) and weak advertisement sales.

According to TU Media, a unit of SK Telecom and the country’s sole provider of satellite-based mobile pay-TV services, the number of the company’s DMB customers reached 2 million as of Friday, a significant jump from the 1.3 million around the same time last year.

A lot of us here at MakeUseOf use Skype to get in touch with each other. Skype, for those who may not know, is a Voice-over-Internet Protocol (VoIP) service which allows unlimited free calls between users using the desktop, mobile or iPhone application.

If you pay for Skype credit, you can call out from Skype on your computer to normal phones (wireless or landline) at a discounted rate. Also, for an additional cost, you may get a “Skype-In” phone number, which is essentially a Skype number disguised as a local land line, so that all calls to that number will be forwarded to your Skype account, allowing you to take the call anywhere and on any computer with Skype installed. This benefits the caller — if Skype is not available, he/she can always contact you simply by dialing a local number.

Japanese Police arrest late actress Jang’s ex-manager

Kim Sung-hoon, head of the late (”Boys over Flowers”) actress Jang Ja-yeon’s former management agency, was arrested in Japan, police said Wednesday.

Kim had been placed on a wanted list on suspicions of forcing up-and-coming actresses, including Jang, to provide sexual favors to showbiz and media VIPs.

Gyeonggi Province police said Japanese officers who had been tipped off about his presence apprehended the 42-year-old at a hotel that afternoon.

He had been hiding out in Japan, defying repeated requests to return to Seoul for questioning.

Kim left the country in March after Jang was found dead in what was ruled a suicide. He fled after Jang’s suicide note, containing the names of public figures she was allegedly forced to have sexual relations with in exchange for raising her media exposure was made public.

Kim has been suspected of being the mastermind behind such deals.
