Posted on makeuseof.com

With SMS messages becoming a key utility in today’s modern world, we are finding ourselves sending more and more of them. But the telecommunications industry is charging a fairly high price on 160 characters. So what can we do about it?  We can send SMS messages for free, or for a very low price by utilizing the magic power of the internet.

The only downside with this is that you have to be sitting in front of a computer, unless of course you have one of those hi-tech phones with internet capabilities.

Kim Yu-na Selects Unusual Music for New Skating Season

%EA%B9%80%EC%97%B0%EC%95%84(5)2009 World Figure Skating Champion Kim Yu-na will skate to a “007 James Bond Medley” for the short program and George Gershwin’s “Piano Concert in F” for the free program of the new skating season that culminates in the Winter Olympic Games in Vancouver in February next year. The choices are surprising considering Kim’s previous musical selections, which last year included “Danse Macabre” and “Scheherazade.”

The Bond medley, which includes music from “Thunderbolt,” “Die Another Day,” “From Russia with Love,” and “Dr. No,” is an especially unusual and exotic choice. This music has been popular with male figure skaters, most notably the 2006 World Champion Brian Joubert of France, but not so much among females, so it will be interesting to see how Kim interprets it.

The philosophy of Korean food

Posted on oneforkonespoon

See this kimbap?  It’s been very badly rolled.  I know because I rolled it myself.  The ingredients shouldn’t be spilling into each other.  The shredded carrot, for example, is all over the place, when it should be grouped together, distinct, and sharp in contrast to the other ingredients.

Korean Food

But you can still see the effect that’s desired—a bright show of colors.  Black in the roasted seaweed, white in the rice, yellow in the pickled daikon and cooked eggs, orange (or red) in the sautéed carrots, and green in the spinach.  The five colors, elements, or phases of Korean (and Chinese) cooking.

(There’s also the brown of the cooked meat and the sautéed burdock root, but I will conveniently ignore that for now.)

The five elements, though, are more than colors.  They represent material elements: wood, fire, earth, metal, water.  They represent emotions, from rage to fear to contemplation.  They are associated with organs in the body and with five essential flavors, sour, bitter, sweet, spicy, and salty.

No one element is best or right.  What’s important is balance.

WiBro now used for VoIP

kt-wibro-logo

KT announced voice mobile phone service will be launched in November using WiBro technology as carrier. Network installations and infrastructure are already initiated. The homegrown long range and in-motion standard will deserve Korean market at cheaper rates for customers and aims to demonstrate positive results to back up its losing-ground worldwide struggle against LTE standard, said KT.

I suggest the underlying truth may be different. This blog has already covered here the governmental walled-garden strategy and pressures over Korean companies to champion WIBRO despite their increasing reluctance.  Contrary to publicly expressed motivations, this move have to be understand in a long-term strategic perspective and have little to do with WIBRO success – or rather lack of success –  abroad. KT is indeed preparing the up-coming IT disruption : the mobile VoIP.

Naver Japan

Naver launched mobile version of its recently-unveiled Japanese web search service. Called Naver Mobile Beta, the service claims to have features that are especially tailored for mobile users.

Naver Japan blog offers a couple of screen shots of Naver Mobile Beta. The screen shot on the left side shows Naver’s top search keywords (“Trend Ranking”). Users can do normal searches through Naver search box, and at the same time they can also browse through popular search keywords (“passive search”, if you will). The latter might be popular among mobile users who just want to “kill time” and see if there is anything interesting happening right now.
