The Chosun Ilbo is Korea’s favorite newspaper, a survey among 10,000 people between 19 and 79 in September by Millward Brown Media Research for the Korea Advertisers Association finds.

Some 20.2 percent of respondents cited the Chosun Ilbo as their favorite paper.

But newspaper readership is falling, from 51.3 percent in 2001 to 31.5 percent this year, meaning newspaper subscriptions have dwindled nearly 20 percent over the last eight years.

A whopping 99.3 percent had a TV, with 1.47 TV sets on average per home. MBC topped the list as the favorite TV channel at 72.8 percent, followed by KBS (71.4 percent), SBS (52.9 percent), YTN (11.9 percent), and OCN (8.8 percent).

Korea Among World’s Top 10 for Wi-Fi Hotspots

Korea has the seventh largest number of Wi-Fi locations in the world with 12,814 hotspots as of the first half of this year, a report released on Sunday reveals.

Wi-Fi hotspots are public areas such as hotel lobbies, airports and cafes where a wireless Internet connection is available for wireless LAN (Wi-Fi) devices.

Study Proves Benefits of Korean Fermented Paste

The Korean fermented pastes called jang are almost the perfect protein food, according to research released in late August by Chonbuk National University’s Medical School. The research team examined the effectiveness of three Korean fermented pastes, applying the same method as the phase 3 clinical trials that are used for testing drugs. The research revealed that doenjang (soybean paste) was effective in removing visceral fat; gochujang (red pepper paste) in treating high cholesterol; and cheonggukjang (rich soybean paste) in increasing the amount of muscle and controlling diabetes.

The research that began in May last year divided 180 obese male adults into three groups, each eating one of the three fermented pastes. They were further subdivided into two groups — one taking real fermented paste and the other fake paste. The participants took a certain amount of fermented paste every day for 12 weeks. The groups taking real fermented paste showed improved health while fake paste had no or even adverse effects on the eaters.

Figure skating champ Kim Yu-na rigorously “limits her calorie intake to 1,200 kcal per day during both the on- and off- season,” her former coach Shin Hye-sook said. But the demanding efforts of figure skating can burn as much as eight kcal per minute, comparable that of handball players. So how can Kim perform if she is only consuming 60 percent of recommended daily intake for an average woman of 2,000 kcal?

Kim yu-na Near Perfect in 1st Win of Season

After a nearly flawless free skate Saturday, Kim Yu-na stepped off the ice and sat down next to coach Brian Orser in the kiss-and-cry, knowing full well that she would be skating away with the gold medal at the Trophee Bompard in Paris.

She had blown away the competition with a clean performance in the short program Friday, separating herself from the rest of the field at the Grand Prix event.

However, as the judges’ scores were revealed, both Kim and Orser got a very big surprise, not that she had won – that was already all but certain ― but that her overall score of 210.93 was a new world record.

Not bad for her first competition of the season.
