Koreans’ Love Affair with Quick Foods

Posted on english.chosun

Without coffee mix, coffee would probably never have grown so popular in Korea. Coffee was first introduced to Korea in the late 19th and early 20th centuries when the country began to open its doors to the West. Instant coffee was smuggled into marketplaces from U.S. military bases after the Korean War, but coffee remained an occasional treat, served when guests were invited. But when Dongsuh Food launched its own instant coffee in 1970, coffee instantly became a national drink. Before then there were popular traditional beverages like sujeonggwa (fruit punch), sweet rice drink, barley tea and ginger tea, but none were so favored as a dessert drink the way coffee was.

The Korean Wave in China

Posted on koreamelon.com

I just read an interesting article about the influence of Korean media on Chinese Youth culture on NY Times:

China’s Youth Look to Seoul for Inspiration

I’ve read about the Korean wave since I saw my first Korean movie in 2000 (SHIRI). It wasn’t until last year when I went to Japan that realized the impact of Korean culture on other Asian countries. Going to a bookstore I would see a separate section for Korean magazines, Korean photobooks (on actors, movies or TV-series) and Korean learning material (I found more Korean textbooks than German textbooks). Going to a department store I would see commcercials and posters with Korean celebrities, at the cinema I would see posters promoting the latest Korean blockbuster. The first artist to sell more than one million CDs was BOA, a Korean singer (who’s under contract with Avex Traxx, a Japanese record company). I couldn’t even go to the ice rink to escape the Korean wave. They were constantly playing the songs from ‘Winter Sonata‘, a Korean TV drama that could be described as the Korean ‘Titanic’.

It was really interesting to observe this phenomenon in Japan. Historically Japan felt little connection to other Asian countries. After WWII Japan’s main cultural influence came from America and that hasn’t really changed till today. Japan is the most important market for American movies. ‘The Last Samurai’ made more money in Japan than in America. Japan is the most important export market for Hip Hop music.

Samsung Bada is Yet Another Mobile Platform

Posted on web20asia.com

Samsung announced its new mobile platform called Bada. Bada means “Ocean” in Korean; the word can also mean “to download” (an app), so I guess branding-wise, Bada couldn’t have been more aptly named, at least for Korean-speaking audience.

So what is Bada? The “About” section of Bada homepage gives an intro, which I think is unnecessarily long and yet somehow fails to get to the point. In a nutshell, Bada is Samsung’s Symbian. Bada entails a new, Samsung-developed smartphone operating system, Samsung’s app store, and Samsung app developer program.

Cyworld US Doesn’t Know “Graceful Sunset”

Posted on web20asia.com

cyworld_logo1

This is from last week, but definitely needs revisiting. Cyworld Us announced it’s closing its service. Well, services can close (though basically it’s a disaster and it shouldn’t happen, as people lose their data), but the real problem is how horribly the company is handling the whole situation. I am appalled by the lack of professionalism in the email notice they sent out. How could they not hire a single English-speaking person to write an email of this importance? The email is so full of grammatical errors that almost half of commenters in the Techcrunch article actually think it was poorly translated by Google Translate, while the email was originally written in English.

N.Korea Ends Experiment with TV Commercials

Posted on  english.chosun.com

North Korea stopped TV commercials in late August, less than two months after they started to be shown in July. A Unification Ministry official on Sunday said occasional advertising of goods on [North] Korean Central TV started July 2 with a commercial for Taedonggang Beer but stopped on Aug. 29.

Quoting a North Korea source, the Yonhap news agency reported that North Korean leader Kim Jong-il fired Cha Sung-su, chairman of the Central Broadcasting Commission in charge of all TV programs. Kim was said to have been “enraged” because he regards commercials as the thin end of the wedge of Chinese-style market reforms. The ministry said the firing has not been confirmed.
