More on the Microsoft Monoculture in Korea

Posted on koreainformationsociety.com

The explosive transformation taking place in South Korea’s mobile broadband market is creating ripples that go in all directions.  The local media and blogs are picking up on the fact that Korea’s electronic transaction and internet banking regulations are causing inconvenience for users and businesses. The current laws favor a sort of Microsoft monoculture, which has been the subject of earlier posts.
The Hankyoreh carried an excellent article on this topic a couple of days ago.

How Samsung Is Tackling Greentech

Posted on earth2tech.com

Just over six months have passed since Korean electronics giant Samsung unveiled a multibillion-dollar push to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from its factories and slash the amount of emissions resulting from its consumer products. But already the South Korea-based conglomerate has its fingers in more than a few greentech pots, including wind power, energy storage, solar manufacturing and solar project development, biomaterials, and energy efficient consumer electronics.

Like energy and engineering conglomerates General Electric and Siemens, Samsung has a sprawling stake in greentech, and some of the company’s longstanding tech (semiconductors) and services (large-scale and offshore engineering) could find new markets. As Greentech Media has noted, ”The Samsung group includes companies specializing in hotels, construction, chemicals, securities, sugar, etc., all of whom are potential test customers and lab partners.” Here are five (plus one) key greentech plays from Samsung.

1forME is Korea’s Etsy

Posted on web20asia.com

1forME is a newly launched Korean e-commerce site that sells hand-made, artists-produced goods. That’s quite a mouthful, but long story short: 1forME is Etsy of Korea.

Etsy saw a gross merchandise sales of about US$ 180M last year, showing some 105% year-over-year growth. This shows that the handmade goods e-commerce is a proven business model, and for every proven business model there’s always an Asia opportunity, especially if the model is culture-neutral. Well, both e-commerce and the love for handmade goods seem to be pretty universal concept, I guess.

‘Manhwa’: The World of Korean Comics

Comics in eastern Asia are a more than just a form of popular entertainment. “漫畵”(read MANGA in Japan, MAN-HUO in China, and MANHWA in Korea) is a part of the cultural life itself. They take the forms of dramatic entertainment, power fantasies, poetic beauties, effective information carriers and everything else you could imagine. If the first major (pleasant) cultural shock struck you in the form of “Manga”, then be prepared: There are more upcoming. Let me introduce you to the next big blow: Korean comics are on the way!

Source : Wiki

Korean comics are goldmines of old masters and young talents, waiting to be discovered. Influenced by the modern comics from the rest of the world and the traditional narrative drawings, they have created their own unique identitities. The Korean society itself has this dynamic passion and power that can’t be easily found elsewhere in the world(remember the red crowd in 2002 Soccer World Cup?) – and naturally, such energy is a essential part in comics as well. In fact, Korea has been going through a quite passionate and dramatic history in this century; The struggle against Japanese colonialism and the military intervention of USA, the Korean War and the mass revolt to overthrow the dictator, the military coup in the following year, the movement for democracy and the massacre of Gwangju, military dictatorship and the democratic resistance. And all along, Korean comics have accompanied, entertained and brought hope to the people. They are full of dramatic energy, and have developed a wide variety of genres, themes, styles, and ways of reading comics.
