Korean Supermarkets Chuseok

One of the things we love to do when we go to new countries is check out their supermarkets. Sounds lame, doesn’t it? I don’t know: it just seems like there’s so much for you to learn from a country’s supermarket. The atmosphere, the stuff they’re selling, the way they market their products. It’s amazing. We felt the same way when we first came to Korea. In fact, going to a Korean Supermarket was one of the first videos we ever made! Over two years ago, when we first came to Korea, we were floored by Home Plus, and did a couple of videos of shopping in Korea. But that was so long ago. Our camera is so much better now! And we’re feeling kinda artsy fartsy lately, so we figured we’d make another video about Shopping in Korea, only this time with our new equipment.

Unfortunately, the awesome Home Plus in Bucheon had a mega-fire. It’s been closed for the past week or so, so we couldn’t make a movie there. Instead, we went to Kim’s Club right beside it, whose business must be going through the roof since it’s neighbour shut down.

So, if you haven’t seen a Korean Supermarket before, here are some cool thing you can expect:

Sharp’s plans to launch two ebook readers in Japan in December. To be sold under the Galapagos brand name, the company hopes to sell a million units within their first year on sale. Talks with Verizon Wireless mean the US is likely to be the second place to see them, sometime in 2011.

Galaxy Tab Makes its Debut in U.S.

Galaxy Tab, Samsung Electronics’ Tablet PC is finally entering the American market, expecting a fierce competition with Apple’s iPad.

Samsung Electronics held a Galaxy Tab launch event in New York on September 16, local time. The event was attended by about 150 officials including associates from American companies, mobile operators, local press and early adopters. Earlier this month, Galaxy Tab made it first debut at the IFA (Internationale Funkausstellung) 2010, the largest home appliances fair in Europe.

Galaxy Tab will be launched through U.S. four major mobile carriers, AT&T, Verizon, Sprint and T Mobile based on the most powerful distribution network. Actual products will be delivered during the fourth quarter of the year, and go on sale as the Christmas holiday season begins.

‘신상터는’ 사이트 코글 논란… “개인정보 유출 조심하세요”

신상 파악이 가능한 검색엔진 ‘코글’이 논란을 일으키고 있다

일부 누리꾼들이 제작한 ‘코글’은 겉모습은 검색엔진 ‘구글’과 비슷하다. 그러나 단순 검색은 물론 네이버 지식인 ID별 검색, 싸이월드 뒷주소와 이름별 검색, 네이버 뉴스 댓글 검색, 다음블로그 ID 검색, IP 정보검색 등 무려 18가지 항목에 따라 검색이 가능해 ‘신상 털기’라는 지적이 일고 있다.

실제 이와 같은 과정을 거치면 연예인뿐만 아니라 일반인에 대한 신상 파악이 가능해 개인정보 유출, 사생활 공개 등 파장이 예상된다.

현재 인터넷에는 ‘네이버 ID 확보’, ‘나이 든 사람들은 자기 한글 이름을 영타로 해서 ID 쓰는 경우가 많으니 참고하기’, ‘온라인 쇼핑몰은 운 좋으면 휴대전화 번호는 물론이고 집 주소까지 알 수 있다’ 등의 정보를 공유하는 글들이 떠돌고 있다.

코글에는 트위터와 페이스북 등에 남긴 글도 모조리 검색이 가능하며 이미 삭제한 트위터 글도 검색되는 경우가 발생하고 있어 심각한 정보 유출이 우려되고 있다.

이를 접한 네티즌들은 “뉴스 댓글 달기도 무섭다”, “ID 관리를 잘해야겠다” 등의 글을 남기며 우려를 나타냈다. 현재 네티즌들은 ‘ID를 통일 해 사용하지 않기, 알파벳과 숫자 조합으로 ID 만들기’ 등 ‘신상털기 예방법’을 만들어 공유하고 있다.

네이버 ‘거리뷰’, 청소년 유해장소 집창촌 노출 ‘논란’

국내 최대 포털사이트 네이버의 지도서비스가 서울 지역의 집창촌을 그대로 노출시키고 있는 것으로 드러났다.

24일 한 매체에 따르면 네이버 ‘거리뷰’를 분석한 결과 서울 영등포동 타임스퀘어 뒷편, 용산구 한강로 용산역 입구, 평택역 인근 등에 위치한 청소년출입금지구역이 그대로 노출된 것으로 파악됐다.

이 매체는 입구에서 바라본 거리 모습은 물론 일부 장소는 내부 모습까지 보인다고 전했다. 특히, 이 서비스는 특별한 제한없이 청소년들도 자유롭게 이용할 수 있기 때문에 문제가 될 수 있다는 지적이다.

지난 8일 서울 수도권과 6개 광역시 등에 서비스한 네이버 ‘거리뷰’는 다음 ‘로드뷰’, 구글의 ‘스트리트뷰’와 비슷한 실사지도 서비스로 현재 후발주자인 만큼 막대한 자금력과 인력을 동원해 최근 서비스 커버리지를 확대하고 있다.

사실 무분별한 노출이나 이에 따른 사생활 침해 문제 등은 네이버 거리뷰뿐만 아니라 대부분의 지도서비스가 안고 있는 문제다.

With Chuseok coming up in a few days, that means the return of the Spam Gift Set! For realz, every single supermarket has these boxes prominently displayed for customers hoping to give their relatives and coworkers the gift of heart disease. Sure, it’s one of those ridiculous and amusing sights that make you laugh and say “only in Korea…” but it’s also quite distressing at the same time. Here, spam is marketed and packaged in such a way as to make people forget what it actually is (not that anyone really knows what Spam is anyway…), and it has been elevated it to near majestic status. I’m not sure whether to be impressed or disturbed.
