Pyeongchang Bid Turns Kim Yu-na into Fashion Icon

After making headlines with her impressive presentation at the International Olympic Committee session to support Pyeongchang’s bid to host the 2018 Winter Olympics, figure skating champion Kim Yu-na remains the talk of the town, this time with the fashion she sported during her trip.

Commentators have been eagerly discussing what she wore at Gimpo Airport on June 27, in the General Assembly of the Association of National Olympic Committees of Africa in Lome, Togo, and in the final presentation in Durban, South Africa on Wednesday.

“Kim Yu-na’s Pyeongchang fashion” became a popular search term on the Internet on Thursday and netizens have posted messages praising her look. Some were quick to discover the brands, which has boosted sales. In the past, Kim has favored casual clothes, but now she plumbs for a mature black-and-white look.

Apple Pays Compensation Over iPhone Tracking

A Korean has won a lawsuit against Apple for W1 million in damages over a secret program in the iPhone that tracks and stores users’ locations (US$1=W1,062). Apple may have to compensate an estimated 3 million iPhone and iPad users in Korea if they file a class-action lawsuit, which could lead to some W3 trillion in compensatory payments.

A district court in Changwon, South Gyeongsang Province on Wednesday said it ordered Apple Korea to pay Kim Hyung-seok (36), a lawyer who filed a suit against the company in late April this year saying the tracking function of his iPhone infringed his constitutionally protected privacy. In late June, Apple Korea paid Kim W998,000, deducting the W2,000 bank commission for the money transfer.

The death of print has long been on the minds of journalists, writers, bloggers, etc. For those of us who grew up reading our books on paper, asking for magazine subscriptions, and watching our dads read the paper (on paper) at the breakfast table, it’s hard to imagine a world without a book case, and the handful of novels we never got around to picking up yet. In South Korea, there seems to be much less fear over a paperless world, as the country has promised to replace all the paper in its schools by 2015.

The peninsular nation plans on spending over $2 billion developing digital text books, which would then be available on students’ school-supplied tablets. Along with more traditional learning content, students will also get access to paperless materials through a cloud-based system. With the cloud in place, sick students, or those brave enough to pull a Ferris Bueller, will have access to their learning materials from home, such as reading lessons and math tutorials.
