Samsung Galaxy S II HD LTE and Galaxy S II LTE

Samsung Korea has unveiled two LTE versions of the Galaxy S II, the Samsung Galaxy S II LTE and the Samsung Galaxy S II HD LTE, the latter packing a huge 4.65-inch Super AMOLED HD display running at 1280 x 720 resolution.

Each model has a 1.5GHz dual-core processor, WiFi a/b/g/n and Bluetooth 3.0 alongwith 4G LTE support and NFC, though the Galaxy S II LTE makes do with a 4.5-inch WVGA panel as on the EPIC 4G Touch.

Both models have an 8-megapixel main camera with autofocus and Full HD video recording, aong with a front-facing camera for video calls. There’s also 16GB of internal storage – plus a microSD card slot – and GSM/HSPA+ roaming for when you’re outside of South Korea’s 4G cosseting. Maybe most impressive is the thickness: both the Galaxy S II LTE and Galaxy S II HD LTE come in at 9.5mm deep, even accommodating a 1850 mAh battery.

Samsung will be offering the Galaxy S II LTE via SK Telecom as a carrier-exclusive, while the Galaxy S II HD LTE will go on sale through SK Telecom, KT and LG U+. No word on when – or indeed if – Samsung will bring either model to the US or Europe, but given the high-ppi appeal of HD displays we’re guessing there’ll be plenty of demand for them.

Naver Japan’s Free Messenger App

It was back in June when Naver Japan, a Japanese local subsidiary of Korea’s search portal giant, introduced a mobile messenger app called Line. It enables free IP phone calls and group chat among up to 100 users at a time. On Friday, the company announced the app has remarkably hit more than 2 million downloads in just three months since its release.

Both the iPhone and Android apps are available for free. By registering your friends with their phone numbers, you are allowed to only connect with other users you know well. For group chatting with foreign language speakers, interpretation assistant functions were recently added, which helps you communicate in Japanese, Chinese, and English.

Samsung President Invited to Steve Job’s Memorial Service

Samsung Electronics President Lee Jae-yong left for the U.S. to attend a memorial service for Apple cofounder Steve Jobs that was scheduled for 10:30 a.m. on Monday (KST).

As Apple CEO Tim Cook reportedly invited Lee to the private service, attention is being paid to how it will affect the patent battle being waged between the two firms in 10 countries. The service will be held at Stanford University in Palo Alto, California.

Lee said his relationship with Jobs, who passed away on Oct. 5 at age 56 after a long fight with pancreatic cancer, was complicated.

“Steve Jobs was a bit hot-tempered and picky, so he would often complain on the phone for an hour or so whenever he had a dispute. We were competitors, but we also grew fond of each other to the point where he would be the first to call and console me whenever I was encountering difficulties,” Lee told the press at Gimpo Airport on Sunday evening.

KBS, MBC release list of 36 banned entertainers

The National Assembly’s Committee on Culture, Sports, Tourism, Broadcasting and Communications released Tuesday a list of 36 entertainers prohibited from appearing on the TV broadcast networks KBS and MBC.

According to a report submitted to parliament obtained by main opposition Democratic Party Rep. Kim Jae-yun, a member of the committee, KBS and MBC banned 23 and 31 entertainers, respectively, from appearing in its TV shows.

Among the banned entertainers, 18 were banned by both broadcasters including singer and TV personalities MC Mong, Lee Seong-jin and Shin Jeong-hwan, TV show host Kang Byung-gyu, actors Lee Gyeong-yeong and Ju Ji-hoon, and singer Lee Sang-min.

Narcotics use was the most common reason for imposing the ban on 12 entertainers. Eight were banned because they appeared on TV shows naked, three for economic crimes such as stock price manipulation and embezzlement, two for drunk driving or hit-and-run, and two for theft.

 

S.Korean TV ‘Can Now Be Watched in Remotest N.Korea’

South Korean TV programs can now be watched even in the northernmost part of North Korea if the channels are adjusted secretly, according to Open Radio for North Korea.

The belief so far was that South Korean channels can be watched in areas close to the South Korean border, such as Hwanghae Province, but the radio station claims it is possible as far North as Onsong, North Hamgyong Province, which is just across the Duman (or Tumen) River from China.

“People in Onsong can watch South Korean programs real-time by adjusting their TV channels,” a source in Onsong said. “The North Korean authorities give out licenses to watch TV and listen to radio only if the channels are soldered in place to prevent people from clandestinely watching or listening to foreign programs, but people with enough technical knowledge can alter the channels.”
