It looks as if more foreigners will come to Korea to receive medical treatment, as the government has decided to allow local hospitals to attract international patients on their own in medical tourism promotion drives.

According to the Ministry for Health, Welfare and Family Affairs, local hospitals and clinics will be able to advertise and work with travel agencies and the like to attract potential patients from abroad to seek a host of medical procedures in Korea starting Friday (May 1).

However, hospitals and clinics will be banned from attracting patients in cooperation with insurance companies.

This revision in medical-related law seeks to promote Korea as a destination for medical tourism.

In addition, the new policy is designed to help decrease the 65 billion won (US$48.1 million) deficit that the country’s medical service sector posts every year, and to eventually boost competitiveness of local hospitals, since they will have to raise the quality of their treatment in order to survive more fierce competition in the future.

The Korea Times yesterday notes that Google Korea plans to “Koreanize” its home page!   The article notes that Naver has a 66 percent share of the search market and Daum is in second place with 20 percent.  Meanwhile, Google has only 2.2 percent of the Korean search market.  The article also points out that Google’s strength has been simplicity, but that now it is ready to compromise that to make its web page more attractive to Korean users who “have grown accustomed to fancy websites crowded with features.”  The article then proceeds to discuss the load time factor, or how long it takes Google’s home page to load.  Everyone knows that Google favors speed.   Number three of its “Ten Things” states that “Fast is better than slow.”
All of this is interesting, but I don’t think it gets to the central point of explaining why Google has such a minuscule market share in Korea.  For insight into that, do a search of this blog for “Google” and read one of my earlier posts on the topic, including this one.    I’d like to repeat some of the main points.

It has become a trend that idol group and talents’ names appear in student’s exam papers.

It has been reported that some male teachers like to use the names of their favourite So Nyeo Shi Dae members or other female entertainers for setting their test papers. Such has become a hot topic on online forums where students share their exam question with the idols’ names in the.

The responses to seeing idols or talents’ names in the exams was that it give exams a fresh feeling. And in fact, it has already become a trend a few years back.

Apple’s iPhone will be officially available on the 28th of this month from South Korea’s second largest mobile phone carrier KT Corp, ending a long wait for South Korea.

KT Corp have been taking reservations for the SmartPhone and plan to hold a special launch event on Saturday for around 1,000 customers who have pre-ordered the phone.

“We are thrilled to bring iPhone to South Korea,” Kim Woo-sik, CEO of KT’s personal customer group, said in a press release.

“Our customers will enjoy the power and benefits of using the revolutionary iPhone on KT’s 3G network.”

As a matter of fact, the debate about the first Korean movie is still ongoing. The foremost problem is that the film recognized until now as the first in Korea’s film history, < Fight for Justice(Uilijeog guto) >, is not completely a dramatic film but a screen-and-stage play, where a performance on an outside stage was recorded on camera and displayed on screen. The director of Shingeukja Productions, Kim Do-san, directed this film with the funds from Park Seung-pil, the manager of Danseongsa and was released in 1919. It was a film to be played in a small section out of the whole theatrical performance so the question about whether this should be regarded as a true film in itself still remains. There are also debates regarding the exact wording of the title, but an advertisement in Maeil Newspaper right about the time the film was released in 1919 writes the title as < Fight for Justice(Uilijeog guto) >. In any case, the Korean film industry views October 27th, 1919, the day of the first premiere of < Fight for Justice(Uilijeog guto) >, as the birth of the Korean film industry and October 27th is commemorated as Film Day. Many people have different interpretations about the content of this movie, but film historian Ahn Jong-hwa refers to it as the story of a man who defeats the schemes of his evil step-mother who has her greedy eyes set on his family assets.

Meanwhile, if we were to consider the first dramatic film as the true first film work, the 1923 film < The Vow Made below the Moon> should be recognized as the first Korean movie. Still, there are people who disagree with this, too. Some Korean film historians such as Jo Hee-mun argue that < The Border (Gukgyeong)>, which was released in January of 1923, should be considered as the first Korean film. However, since the production of this film was mainly directed a Japanese production company, Shochiku, and the producer was also Japanese, most people find it meaningless to recognize this as Korea’s first film. Also, since < The Vow Made Below the Moon(Weolha-ui mangseo) > was funded by Japanese capital, some argue that < The Story of Jang-hwa and Hong-ryeon (JanghwaHongryeonjeon) > made in 1924 and funded by Park Seung-pil, the president of Danseongsa, should be considered as the first Korean film. But this is not a widely accepted view either. At present, the 1923 film < The Vow Made below the Moon(Weolha-ui mangseo) > should be considered as the first dramatic film of Korea.

 i get very stressed reading CHO SE HEE’s

“A Ball Shot by a Midget”

i read this when i was in grade 5 and got VERY stressed.

and i was talking about this with my boyfriend

and we were like….gosh this book is the most

amazing korean novel …very politicial and very very …amazing

the book is based in 1970’s korea, where we just finished war and

we went through a phase of poverty, culture shocks, communism VS capitalism,

american soliders bullying koreans, new rising bourgeois class who bought all the

land for shit little money from lying and stealing from the poor,

and got into real estates (they are still most the bourgeois of seoul.)

massive changes, dictatorship….new ideals, confusion

hate towards rich has developed since then i think, cos in korea our

modern history is very short

(THANKS TO THE INVOLVEMENT OF JAPANESE AND AMERICAN GOV AND FUCKING WAR)

although our history is very long (i think about 4500 years…)

our modern history is so short, and there was a massive change.

i even remember when i was born, south korea was kind of thrid world country,

and when i was in school we were “developing country” and now we are a

“developed country”. massive fast changes took place, and i get so stressed

reading this book, cos i know this was in the 70’s but the stories still

apply to our modern histroy .

IF YOU ARE A KOREAN KID i think you should really stop watching haha hee hee

comedy show programs on TV and stop idolizing young idol boy bands and

start READING.

stop getting numb from getting swept by the media and make your own decisions

stop looking at the advertisements where they say “you are the one”

you are not the one.

Korean supermodel Daul Kim(김다울), who was regarded as one of the most beautiful models in the world, was found dead by French police in her Paris apartment, Thursday, her modeling agency Next Management said in a statement. She was 20 years old.

She was a top model and a great friend to all of us at Next. Please respect her family’s privacy at this time of sadness. We will all miss her very much,” it said.

No other details of her death have been made available, though some reports speculate that she committed suicide.

An official from Esteem, a Seoul-based agency representing Kim, said, “We heard the news from our Paris agency and don’t know any details yet.”

A world-renowned model, Kim was named No. 17 on Fashion Time Magazine’s “Top 20 Hottest Models” list in 2008.
