Sung Jae gi Han River Suicide

A man tried to drown himself in the Han River

Three men stand by idly, even took a picture and made a video.

South Korea KBS TV station is being criticized for camerman’s looking on without doing anything.

A Man takes his own life by leaping from a bridge, but KBS cameraman is filming death leap scene.

Their behavior trench closely on madness.

  1. KBS cameraman is shooting a man before jumping to his death from the Mapo Bridge.

The  public television service can’t do this.

  1. “@steelove77: @actwalk 여기” 헐… 성재기 투신 촬영한게 kbs 맞네요. kbs 의 그간의 행태와 더불어 취재 및 보도윤리가 상당히 논란될거 같은데 사장 물러나야할 사안인 듯.

  2. 성재기씨 투신 할 때 구명조끼라도 입히지않고 주위에서는 뭐 했나? 참 너무도 어이없고 슬픈 일이다

Television still most Powerful among news media

Posted on :

Korea’s three largest-circulation daily newspapers account for more than half of all newspapers’ power to influence public opinion, a government panel concluded Thursday.

Television proved to be the most powerful media outlet, while conventional print media is losing ground to online media.

This is the first time a survey on the concentration of media outlets’ power to influence the formation of public opinion has been conducted, with the aim of getting “an objective view of the media market.”

According to the three-year study by a panel under the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, television marked 47.2 percent in weighted concentration ratio ― a measure of influence based on market share and strength of impact ― followed by online news outlets at 26 percent and newspapers at 17.3 percent, showing that people paid the most attention to the small screen.

TV news and investigative programs were shown to be influential among people of all generations, while newspapers attract older people and youngsters were drawn to online outlets.

Among the 70 daily newspapers in the country, the three largest dailies ― Chosun, JoongAng and Donga ― held 57.6 percent of the concentration ratio. Chosun marked 23.7 percent, JoongAng 17.9 percent and Donga took 16 percent. Only seven other papers recorded 2 percent concentration ratio.

When it comes to online news,, the website for the Chosun Ilbo newspaper, topped the chart with 7.6 percent followed by the websites for JoogAng Ilbo, 6.8 percent and Yonhap News, 5.9 percent.

I Can’t Stop Looking at These South Korean Women Who’ve Had Plastic Surgery

South Korea has the highest per capita rate of plastic surgery in the world

Plastic Surgery korea

There’s a full-length mirror and a scale on every single floor of the all-girls high school where Julia Lurie works. She’s an American teaching English in South Korea, and apparently, South Korea has the highest per capita rate of plastic surgery in the world — one in five women in Seoul have undergone some kind of procedure. Most popular: Eyelid surgery, to make the eyes “more Western,” and getting your jawbone shaved or chiseled down for a less-square and more V-shaped look.

“When you are applying for university or appling for a job here, you put a picture of yourself on your resume or application,” Lurie says in a recent segment on This American Life (you can listen to here). “It is sort of taken for granted that how you look will often go into the decision.” She says she’s been told that if there are two otherwise equal candidates, the prettier person will get the job. Her students see this as normal — perhaps unsurprising when you consider the nation’s status as the country most obsessed with plastic surgery.

As an experiment, Lurie asked her students to describe a beautiful woman. “White skin,” they replied. “Big eyes.” Thin. Tall. B cup. Sounds like the same narrow standards of beauty fashion magazines and designers doing runway shows adhere to, standards that are eventually broadcast with images seen around the world.

Twitter user gets suspended sentence for North Korea retweets

A judge in Suwon convicted a 24-year-old photographer of violating the National Security Act by retweeting messages praising North Korea. Judge Shin Jin-woo of the criminal division at Suwon District Court sentenced Park Jung-geun on Nov. 21 to 10 months in prison suspended for two years for the Twitter messages. In his ruling, Shin said the court had “sufficient grounds for recognizing the text the defendant wrote or retweeted as ‘expression aiding the enemy’ as defined by the National Security Act.” He also said the court “recognizes that he had the goal of aiding the enemy.” Shin went on to say, “While Twitter is private by nature, a place where a person states his or her thoughts or opinions briefly within 140 characters, it cannot be restricted to a space of simple personal communication because there is no way of blocking access by an unspecified multitude, and the ripple effect is large.”

Korean webtoons reach out to world

Webtoons have become more than a cultural item. With the help of rapidly spreading high-tech mobile gadgets, a growing number of people are

exposed to webtoons and businessmen are seeking to use them in new entrepreneurial opportunities.

“No one can deny that webtoons can be powerful sources. They are read by millions of people, which is commercially attractive. Also they can be adapted to different media platforms,” said Lee Du-ho, a Korea Creative Contents Agency PR officer. The Cartoon Industry White Paper 2011 notes that while the overall cartoon industry is sliding, the digital cartoon sector, especially webtoons, is enjoying a boom.

Adaptation to other industries

The recent slew of successful webtoon-based films and TV dramas have accelerated the syndrome ― popular webtoon artists are developing affiliated projects including the publication of their creations, selling rights for TV, the silver screen and other adaptations as well as franchising the work with souvenirs and other commodities.
